엑스트라 버진(Extra Virgin) 올리브유에 들어있는 올레오칸탈(oleocanthal) 성분이 암세포만 골라 죽인다는 연구결과가 나왔다. 
미국 럿거스 대학과 헌터 대학 연구팀은 올레오칸탈이 암세포의 '쓰레기'를 저장하는 소포(vesicle)를 파괴해 암세포를 저절로 죽게 만든다는 연구결과를 발표했다고 과학뉴스 포털 메디컬 익스프레스(MedicalXpress)가 16일 보도했다.

종양을 축소하는지를 확인하는 실험을 진행할 계획이다. 이 연구결과는 '분자·세포 종양학'(Molecular and Cellular Oncology) 최신호에 실렸다.시험관에서 암세포를 올레오칸탈에 노출시킨 결과 암세포가 30분에서 1시간 안에 급속히 소멸했다고 연구팀은 밝혔다. 세포가 손상되었을 때는 세포 스스로가 자살하는 이른바 세포사멸(programmed cell death)이 일어나는데 세포사멸에는 통상 16-24시간이 소요된다.

올레오칸탈에 노출된 암세포가 이처럼 빨리 사멸하는 것은 자체 효소 때문이라고 럿거스 대학의 영양학교수 폴 브레슬린 박사는 밝혔다. 올레오칸탈은 암세포 안에 있는 '쓰레기통'이자 '재활용센터'인 리소솜에 구멍을 뚫어 폐기물이 쏟아지게 함으로써 암세포의 사멸을 유도한다고 그는 설명했다.

암세포에 있는 리소솜은 정상세포의 것보다 커서 상당히 많은 쓰레기를 담고 있으며 이 쓰레기통이 열리면 모든 게 다 쏟아져 나온다고 그는 말했다. 그러나 올레오칸탈은 정상세포는 해치지 않는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 올레오칸탈은 정상세포의 생활주기(life cycle)를 일시적으로 정지시켜 '수면' 상태에 빠지게 한 다음 하루가 지나면 정상적인 활동이 재개된다고 연구팀은 밝혔다.

연구팀은 다음 단계의 연구로 살아있는 동물에서 올레오칸탈이 암세포를 죽이고 동물에서 올레오칸탈이 암세포를 죽이고 종양을 축소하는지를 확인하는 실험을 진행할 계획이다. 이 연구결과는 '분자·세포 종양학'(Molecular and Cellular Oncology) 최신호에 실렸다.

Professor Paul Breslin, the coauthor of the study, explains that the process causes “Hell to break loose” within the carcinogenic cell interior.
